When you learn how to love yourself, you see things in a completely different way.
“A healthy self-love means we have no compulsion to justify to ourselves or others why we take vacations, why we sleep late, why we buy new shoes, why we spoil ourselves from time to time. We feel comfortable doing things which add quality and beauty to life.”
– Andrew Matthews
It’s more than just learning how to love yourself. When you truly embrace yourself for who you are, you start to see things you never saw or noticed before. It’s taken me the majority of the time I’ve spent here on Earth, but I finally accept myself, just the way I am.
The feelings are hard to put into words, but I’m going to try my best. It’s almost as if someone has turned a light on for me, where before all I saw was darkness. What I could see wasn’t fully in focus, and now it’s all become clear.
Before, I used to see myself as broken and flawed. While I still may feel a little broken in some ways, I realize I’m not necessarily broken. At least, not in a bad way. All those pieces, they come together, and when put together in just the right way, they show me exactly who I really am. Without each and every one of these pieces, I wouldn’t be me.
When you think about it this way, it doesn’t make me broken at all. These pieces actually make me whole. I had to recognize and realize this before I could learn to love myself. Making this connection also made it easier to understand and accept a lot of the things I’ve gone through. If I hadn’t gone through what I did, I wouldn’t know what I know now, and I wouldn’t be the person I am today.
See the connection?
What it feels like to love yourself
When you learn how to love yourself, the world around you changes completely. You start to feel content, possibly for the first time in your life. Not only do you feel this, you get a better understanding of what contentedness really means. Loving yourself also allows you to love others in a better and more meaningful way.
When you love yourself, it feels like a huge weight has been lifted from your shoulders. You will find yourself looking at everything in a more positive way. It also gives you more confidence in yourself, and in everything you do.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re quirky, weird, honest or shy, just love yourself and all of the things that make you the amazing and wonderful person you are. Everyone has their own little habits, and those are the things that make us unique. Even the things you love, fear, embrace or avoid are all a part of you.
So what if you don’t like doing certain things, but love doing others. As long as you’re happy with what you make your life to be, none of these things matter! Learning to love yourself also means learning to let things just be as they are, and being content with that. It also means if you want to explore new things, do it. Loving yourself means doing what works best for you. And yes, that really is okay.
Don’t ever let anyone else dictate what it is that makes you happy with just being yourself.
