Journaling for mental health is amazingly therapeutic, and has some surprising mental health benefits!


Not only that, but journaling for mental health can be enjoyable, as well as insightful! You can learn a lot from yourself.

It might seem a little daunting when first getting started. You may have some questions on how to begin, such as: What should I write about? What should my writing style be? Where do I begin?

Don’t worry about doing it wrong, there is no right or wrong way to write, this is your own personal journal. You can write about anything you want!

You could write about how you’re feeling, what your day has been like, things that are on your mind. Use it to keep track of your good days and bad days, changes in symptoms, or things you’d like to improve.

Create goals, a mental health plan, or just get your thoughts out. Journaling for mental health is all about you. (That’s the best part!)

My favorite journals are from the Erin Condren collection, I absolutely love their designs. They’re also customizable, you can even personalize them with your name. There are tons of designs to choose from!

Some tips that can help you with journaling –

  • Plan out your time for writing. Choose a day (or a few days) each week to write in your journal. This way, it will become a part of your routine. Pick a time of day that you know you’ll have to dedicate just to your writing.
  • Find a comfortable and quiet place to do your journaling. You can think more clearly and focus more easily with no interruptions.
  • Take some time to reflect on your day. Ask yourself questions about how your day or week went. Does anything specific stand out to you? If so, think about how it made you feel.
  • Just write. Let your thoughts flow out freely onto the paper. This is just for you, it’s a safe place for you to express yourself honestly, and without judgement.
  • Dedicate a specific amount of time to allow yourself for writing. This way, you can prevent yourself from overthinking what to write. Be sure to read over your entry, and add anything you’ve forgotten.


If you’re still having trouble, you may want to consider using something called a journal prompt to help you get started. Journal prompts are an excellent tool for beginners, but they can also give fresh ideas to experienced journal writers as well.

They can provide you with both inspiration and topics to write about. This is especially helpful when journaling for mental health. Sometimes it can be hard to pinpoint what it is you’re feeling, and journal prompts help you to get started.

Whatever type of writing style you go with, whether just writing on your own, or using a guide to help, keeping a journal is extremely helpful. My personal favorite journal of all time is You’re Weird: A Creative Journal For Misfits, Oddballs, and Anyone Else Who’s Uniquely Awesome. I love this one because it really speaks to me, lol. I also love it because it’s a combination journal/activity book, and it makes writing more fun. It’s definitely different, so I feel like it fits me perfectly.

Writing truly is good for the soul, no matter what you choose to write about. I could go on and on about the many benefits of journaling, especially when it comes to taking care of your mental health. There is nothing to lose, and tons to gain from it.

I think you’ll be both surprised and amazed at how just writing your thoughts down can help you. It seems like such a simple task. But it can make a world of difference in helping you with your mental health. Once you get started, it gets easier and easier to write. After awhile, the thoughts just start flowing out onto the paper and out of your head.

I know it has helped me. I have learned so much from myself, and it has truly quieted my thoughts in a way I never thought possible. It’s also a great way for me to reflect on my progress and how far I’ve come. This is very motivating for me.
