The Winter “blahs” can be rough, but there are some ways to get through it!
The Winter months can be a tough time to get through. Especially if you have trouble with Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD for short. It’s cold, it’s blah, and it can be hard to get motivated to do much of anything. Don’t let the Winter blah’s get you down. Instead, make the best of it, and have some fun!
Finding fun things you can do in the Winter will help pass the time while you count down to Spring, and keep you busy. And we all know how important it is to stay busy – too much idle time leads to unnecessary overthinking. Nobody wants that.
Instead, let’s get up off our butts, and get moving! This list of fun things you can do in the Winter has some great ideas to try out, and are especially fun if you have kids. What have you got to lose? Oh yeah….being blah this Winter. Come on, let’s have a little fun instead!
1. Ice Skating
Omg, my kids and I love to go ice skating, and luckily we have several outdoor ice rinks close by! We have so much fun together, even if we’re falling on our butts half the time. I feel like ice skating (especially on an outdoor rink) really gives you the opportunity to appreciate Winter a little more. It doesn’t cost much, and it’s fun for the whole family!
2. Tacky Light Tours
Tacky light tours are a great tradition to start, if you haven’t already. You know you love seeing people get crazy and creative with their decorating! You can go on your own rogue tour to neighborhoods known to jazz things up, or find local tours in your area. The best part is, it’s free!
3. Winter Parades & Festivals
If your area participates in putting together Winter parades and/or festivals, go and check them out! They’re usually free, and they’re fun for everyone. It’s something different to do, and they’re usually only around for a limited time, so take advantage!
4. Go To The Movies
5. Have A Family Movie Night At Home Once A Week
Everyone can take turns choosing the movie!
6. Play In The Snow
I know it doesn’t snow everywhere, but if you live in a place that gets snow, get outside and play in it! Make snow angels, snowmen, or have a snowball fight. Find a good place to go sledding, and get out there and have some fun!
7. Go Skiing/Snowboarding
If you don’t live in an area that gets snow, consider planning a trip to a ski resort. If you’ve never been, they have beginner trails where you can practice. It’s great exercise, and you get an awesome rush from it!
8. Take a mini vacation to somewhere warm
9. Join a local club/group in your area
Check out meetup.com for ideas!
10. Have A Fire Pit Party
Invite friends or family over and gather around your outdoor fire pit. You could roast marshmallows, make s’mores, or enjoy a few drinks. Fire pits are a fun way to enjoy being outside, and will help to keep you warm at the same time! It’s also a fun way to get your favorite people together to hang out.
11. Get Your Bake On
Gather your ingredients, throw on your apron, and get in the kitchen and get your bake on! Bake your favorite cookies and desserts, or cakes and pies. Get creative, try something new and different! You could also make homemade spreads, and give them away to spread some cheer! This is another idea that’s great to do with your kids.
12. Break Out The Board Games
13. Organize Your House
14. Go For A Hike In The Woods
15. Visit Local Museums
Go check out your local Art Museum, or visit a Science Museum. It’s a great way to pass the time, and gives you an opportunity to get out and walk around.
16. Visit Your Local Library
Check out some good reads, or even read while you’re there just to get out awhile. Most libraries also have computers and other activities you can do while you’re there.
17. Find Some DIY Crafts To Try
18. Join A Gym
19. Plan A Paint & Sip
Get some friends together and plan out a few hours to hang out and make some art, while sipping on your favorite wine! Check around in your area for places that do this. I’ve done it a few times, and it’s so much fun. I definitely recommend checking this out!
20. Take Cooking Classes
21. Take On A House Project
Maybe there’s a room you’ve been meaning to paint, or you want to rearrange a room. This is the perfect time to tackle those kinds of projects!
